I’ve installed traffic management schemes everywhere from city centres with traffic jams longer than the river Nile to rural villages with nothing around except for couple of cows to chat to.

That got me thinking about all the weird and wonderful roads in the UK and I’ve put together my top 5 list!

Steep Hill, Lincoln

This is one of the steepest streets in the country as it stands at a staggering 16.12(degree) gradient. Imagine installing a road closure or footpath closure up there!

Gravelly Hill interchange

No list would be complete without mentioning ‘Spaghetti junction’! This complicated road network was opened on May 24 1972 and is located on the M6 junction 6 near Birmingham. There are 5 levels to the junction which serves 18 routes – how many cones would it take to cover that?!

A1

Spanning 410 miles, joining London to Edinburgh, the A1 is the longest A-road in the UK. The road was named A1 in the 1920s by the Ministry of Transport. However it is thought to date back much further than that as archaeologists unearthed a site on a stretch of the road in North Yorkshire which dated back between 6000 – 8000 BC.

Abbey Road, London

There’s no need to spell it out on a portable VMS – if you’re a massive Beatles fan like I am you’ll know this street is the location for one of the band’s most famous album covers. I’ve been past it many times delivering TM and always wanted to recreate the famous image!

M25, London

This road is classed as one of Britain’s busiest motorways and is Europe’s second longest ‘orbital route’. The road circles most of greater London and last year celebrated its 30th birthday. I’ve laid out miles of cones on here in my time – and been stuck in plenty of traffic jams!
