Location: East Stockwith, Lincolnshire

Sector: Events traffic management

The project

East Stockwith Parish Council contacted Nationwide Traffic Solutions requesting a road closure for their World War Two memorial. The event commemorated the lives of the Lancaster ME323-PH-P crew who lost their lives when their plane was shot down over the village in March 1945.

NTS were asked to provide traffic management for a service and parade through the centre of the village to the memorial followed by a celebration and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Approx 200 visitors were expected to attend.

The timescale for organising the memorial was restricted as the Parish Council waited for confirmation of the date the Memorial Flight could take place.

The solution

Once the enquiry was received NTS acted swiftly. Following completion of a detailed site survey, NTS commissioned the following traffic management measures:

  • Road closure and diversion (includes a man and van) – x1
  • Advance warning signage and letter drop – x1
  • CAD traffic management plan – x1
  • Special Legend signage – Event Parking signs – x6
  • Additional marshal – x1

So the parade could commence through the village, the team installed a full road closure along Back Street. To minimise congestion, diversion routes were put in place. Parking suspensions approved in advance improved pedestrian access during the parade.

As with all our traffic management schemes, a detailed Risk Assessment and Method Statement was completed free of charge for the customer to minimise risk.

Chris Bainborough, East Stockwith Parish Councillor said: “NTS handled everything for us, and even at the last moment revised the traffic management plan to ensure some vehicles could be escorted through the road closure safely to keep all in the village happy.

“The whole event went superbly well, and the organising committee are grateful to NTS for keeping this special event safe and stress free.”

Kyle Moy, NTS Area Manager, said: “Helping the Parish Council organise a memorial event that was special to the village was a pleasure.

“We are delighted we could help make the parade run smoothly and would like to thank all the residents and visitors for their co-operation.”
