Hire impact protection vehicles

An Impact Protection Vehicle is a large safety truck with a crash cushion used in traffic management to protect road workers and road users by absorbing the force of a vehicle collision. The main role of an IPV is to act as a moving or stationary protective barrier between live traffic and road workers. If a vehicle accidentally enters a work zone, the IPV absorbs the impact and reduces the severity of the crash. Used for high-speed roadworks (motorways and dual carriageways).

Options available

Why do I need an IPV?

1. Safety of workers – Roadside workers are exposed to high-speed traffic. An IPV provides a physical, energy-absorbing barrier between workers and vehicles that may stray into the work zone. It reduces the risk of fatalities or serious injuries if a vehicle collides with the site.
2. Protection for road users – If a driver makes a mistake (distracted, fatigued, or speeding), the IPV absorbs much of the crash energy. This lessens the severity of the collision for the driver and passengers compared to hitting a stationary works vehicle or workers directly.
3. Legal and compliance requirements – On high-speed roads in the UK (motorways and dual carriageways), IPVs are often mandated by National Highways standards for temporary traffic management. Without one, the contractor could be in breach of health and safety legislation and traffic management regulations.
4. Operational protection An IPV prevents damage to expensive works equipment and vehicles ahead of the buffer truck. It ensures that the work can continue safely and without costly interruptions from accidents.
